7 Tips for Avoiding Fall Allergies

Avoid Fall Allergies

Avoiding fall allergies this season can be a critical part of enjoying this time of year. Ragweed, outdoor mold, dust mites, and pet dander are the most common allergies this time of the year. A variety of causes can trigger allergic reactions including temperatures, wet leaves, outdoor allergens being tracked in, or even starting up the furnace for the first time. The stress that seasonal allergies bring can be avoided. At Chem-Dry, we have seven tips for our customers.

High-Efficiency Furnace Filter

Installing a high quality furnace filter can help your home greatly. Fine dust, pollen, pet dander, and other small particles will get caught if you use a filter with a minimum filtration rating of MERV 8.

Close Your Doors and Windows

Since pollen can travel up to 400 miles from its source, it can seem impossible to stay away from exposure when the pollen count is up. Pollen count within the home can be reduced by closing doors and windows when the count outside is high.

Wear a Mask

No matter the pollen count, outside work still needs to be done. Particulate respirators, such as an NIOSH N95, can help you block particles that irritate your allergies.

Clean Your Carpets

The fibers of the carpet trap allergens and bacteria causing them to build up over time. The allergens and bacteria in the air and carpets are reduced by Bob’s Chem-Dry's cleaning process. You can learn more about our Home Health Study by following the link.

Get a HEPA filter Vacuum

It's unrealistic to expect that you get your home cleaned by professionals weekly. A three-stage HEPA filter vacuum is the recommended vacuum to use once or twice weekly between professional cleanings. Helping maintain the healthy state of your home, this machine reduces dust mites, dust, pet dander, and other allergens from the surfaces in your home.

Shower Before Bed

Your hair can trap smoke, dust, pollen, and mold throughout the day. These allergens are transferred to the surface of your pillow when you retire at the end of the day and will come in contact with your face. Rinse allergens from your hair by taking a quick shower before you lay down to minimize night-time allergy symptoms.

Allergy-Proof Your Bed

Fabric covers that are allergen-proof should cover your box springs, pillows, and mattresses to improve the health of your bed. This is a necessary precaution to take because dust, dust mites, and their waste can build up in your bed.

Tile & Stone

*Based on studies conducted by independent laboratories of Chem-Dry’s HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction), P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment), Granite Countertop Renewal, and Tile, Stone & Grout cleaning processes. Allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergen. Pet odor results based on testing with the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine. Pet urine bacteria results based on Chem-Dry’s HCE cleaning process and a sanitizer, combined with P.U.R.T. All bacteria results include use of sanitizer. Figures are an average across multiple tests.
